New paper out by Dr. Hanqing Zhang

on data-driven structural damage evaluation and post-earthquake damage state assessment

by Eleni Chatzi

New collaborative paper out, led by Hanqing Zhang (Tongji University and visiting researcher at the Chair of Structural Mechanics and Monitoring at ETH Zurich) in collaboration with Yves Reuland (SMM Chair and irmos technologies AG), Jiazeng Shan (Tongji University) and Eleni Chatzi (SMM Chair, ETH Zürich)!

In this work, we propose a damage evaluation method for earthquake-excited structures relying on the hysteresis curve reconstruction approach. Central to this method is the use of an equivalent single-degree of freedom (ESDOF) system, designed to model structural overall hysteresis and to facilitate an acceleration-based Damage Indicator (DI). This DI is integrated into a framework for assessing structural damage and post-earthquake seismic performance levels, leveraging Seismic Structural Health Monitoring data.

A large-scale RC frame shaking table test is employed for a evaluation of the proposed scheme, allowing to illustration of the damage assessment and the damage state evaluation performance of the proposed method. With the utilization of the ESDOF concept, the damage state evaluation results can provide effective physical information besides the DI values. The relatively low requirements for prior model information and structural nonlinear behavior render the proposed method applicable to real-world implementation and, consequently, facilitate the rapid post-earthquake decision-making process.
