Congrats to Dr. Hoelzl

for his successful defence!

Congratulations to Cyprien Hoelzl, who successfully defended his thesis on On Board Monitoring for Railway Infrastructure Condition Assessment!

The thesis, was supported by the ETH Mobility Initiative at ETH Zürich and was conducted in close collaboration with Aurelia Kollros, Lucian Ancu, PhD, and Marcel Zurkirchen of the Measurement and Diagnostics Division of the SBB CFF FFS.

In his work, Cyprien proposes a comprehensive On-Board monitoring (OBM) approach to monitoring railway infrastructure, by primarily relying on exploitation of vibrationmonitoring data, and assessing their potency in terms of discovering long (longitudinal level) and short wavelength defects (surface defects, welds, squats). He puts forth a holistic framework, which combines data-driven condition indicators with robust outlier analysis and expert feedback for actionable implementation in railway management.

Cyprien Hoelzl has been a powerhouse juggling research with contributions in education (our undergraduate class Baustatik II, in particular) and valuable support of our further team members in terms of data handling, monitoring and experimentation!
Thank you for this dedicated and exceptional work Cyprien!
