On-board monitoring of rail roughness profiles
new paper by Dr. Charikleia Stoura, ETH Postdoctoral Fellow, in the journal of Structural Control and Health Monitoring.
In this work, led by Charikleia Stoura in collaboration with Vasilis Dertimanis, Cyprien Hoelzl, and Eleni Chatzi from the Chair of Structural Mechanics and Monitoring at ETH Zurich, Claudia Kossman from the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), and Alfredo Cigada from Politecnico di Milano, we propose a mobile sensing approach to reconstruct rail roughness profiles assuming on-board acceleration data from sensors mounted on trains.
Specifically, we propose a fusion of reduced-order vehicle models with a Dual Kalman Filter for joint input-state estimation. To enhance the inference, we opt for a prior updating of the vehicle model parameters on the basis of an Unscented Kalman Filter and available measurements from a diagnostic vehicle. The proposed framework is validated on actual acceleration measurements collected from a diagnostic vehicle of the Swiss Federal Railways network.
