New Open-Access Dataset on Lab-Scale Structural Dynamics
Collaborative release by ETH Zurich and Politecnico di Milano
We are pleased to announce the public release of the dataset “Dynamic Characterization of a Laboratory-Scale Structure”, now freely accessible on Zenodo.
This dataset is the result of a collaborative experimental effort between the Chair of Structural Mechanics and Monitoring (SMM) at ETH Zurich and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. Developed in the context of Matteo Brambilla’s research stay at ETH Zurich, the work was carried out in close collaboration with Prof. Paolo Chiariotti, Prof. Alfredo Cigada, and members of the SMM Chair, including Dr. Vasilis Dertimanis, Dominik Werne, Konstantinos Vlachas, and Prof. Eleni Chatzi.
The campaign involved extensive dynamic testing of a four-story laboratory structure in both undamaged and artificially damaged configurations. The dataset includes:
Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) under impact hammer excitation
Random excitation tests using a 6-DOF shaking table
Full documentation of test setup, sensor layout, and data usage guidelines
All data is provided in MATLAB format, supporting applications in structural dynamics, system identification, SHM, and data-driven modeling.
